They are then sent by the tonne to cities such as Hong Kong and Shanghai – where the ‘premium’ meat is turned in to a delicacy. Chinese will pay higher prices for the fins – but much of this haul will go to local destinations.

The slaughter occurs on an industrial scale.

Meanwhile, the world’s shark populations are decreasing faster than BP’s share price after the oil spill.

The population of the scalloped hammerhead shark alone is down 98 per cent.

3,000 Birds Now Killed or Covered by Oil in the Gulf

Where?
Mexico Gulf

What is it so special?
With the tentatively good news breaking that the oil flow has been halted — according to BP at least — it may be time to return the focus to the devastation the spill has wrought. A good place as any to start is with the wildlife. The birds and sea turtles that have fallen victim to the oil slick are among the most public faces of the BP spill’s destruction. And recent numbers have revealed that at least 3,000 birds have been covered or killed by the crude.

Beijing hits a near-record 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia break 100 degrees and set new daily highs. Meanwhile, in Baghdad and Riyadh, on July 6 it was 113 and 111 degrees, warmer than average but still cooler than in Kuwait, which set the day’s world temperature high at 122 degrees….

Yes, we’re suffering a global heat wave. No, it’s not the apocalypse. But it may be a further sign of climate change.

“You can’t say any one heat wave is caused by global warming. But you can say that what global warming does is it makes events just like this more likely,” says Anthony Leiserowitz, director of the Yale Project on Climate Change.

What is it so special?
The growing oil spill in waters near Louisiana is a threat to an astonishing range of life, from endangered sperm whales and sea turtles to migratory birds and prized shrimp and oysters.

With an estimated rate of 210,000 gallons per day of oil leaking from the damaged site we can only imagine the horrorific effects this will have on wildlife.   The spill threatens 445 species of fish, 45 species of mammals, 32 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 134 species of birds.

Arctic Sea Ice Loss Confirmed As Main Cause of Faster Polar Warming

It’s long been known that melting Arctic ice could help speed global warming. As the ice melts, surface reflectivity changes, more heat is absorbed than reflected, more warming.

Using the most recent observational data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, Screen and co-author Ian Simmonds uncovered a nearly perfect season-by-season match during the 20-year period analysed between surface warming trends and reductions in sea ice cover.

The findings show that the main driver of so-called “polar amplification” — warming in excess of the global average — is shrinking ice cover, and not increased cloudiness or changes in ocean and atmospheric circulation, as others have argued.

Since 1989, the Arctic has warmed over 2°C, compared to a global average of 0.5°C.
